Who were the real entrepreneurs of the gold rush?

It’s funny when you think of all of the unexpected opportunities that come from one simple shift in the marketplace.

The gold rush is the classic example. So many people went California to strike it big and many failed. But who were the real creative types - the opportunity seekers - the entrepreneurs in the bunch?

I’ll tell you who - the folks who sold the shovels, the supplies and the clothing to the miners. Think about it, who’s names do we remember from that era? Levi Strauss is one that comes to mind… and he didn’t get famous for panning for gold.

I think what this shows you is that opportunities compound in ways you might never expect. Take - say the coaching boom that has happened in the last 10 years or so. We’ve seen new opportunities in virtual assisting, blogging, web development, audio engineering, online marketing services, video production, graphic design transcription and so much more. These businesses all thrive on each other. Coaches might think that only people who’s lives they are changing are their clients, but as cited in this example, the ripple affect goes far further than that one relationship.

You can find this anywhere in the business world. Opportunity seeking creates new opportunities.
