If You’re Not Repurposing Content, You Are Losing Money

Written by Caleb Scoville on February 5, 2009 – 3:37 pm -

It’s all too common for business owners to turn into the greatest bottlenecks in their businesses. Most of my friends, associates and clients don’t even take advantage of the knowledge and expertise that they have. Sure, they may host a teleseminar or two, but then the audio just ends up sitting there (if they even got around to recording it) and only benefits the people who were actually on the call.

Here’s the thing - you can help a lot more people and make a lot more money if you let you knowledge and your content work for you.

You may have said something 100,000 times, but if it still may be new to 95% of your potential clients.

That’s why you HAVE TO repurpose your content.

Just because a natural speaker, doesn’t mean everyone in your target market is a natural listener.

Just because you’re a natural writer, doesn’t mean that all of your potential clients are readers.

There are so many media channels out there now that you don’t necessarily know where your clients are hanging out. You may know what key terms their searching for and understand the characteristics of their demographic, but because everything is so individualized, the way they consume your content shouldn’t be defined by how you produce it.

Case in point: did you even know what Twitter was a year ago? Even if you did, were you using it?

These days, it’s not unusual for business to hire people, get clients and prospects and network on Twitter. In fact, for coaches and consultants, it’s becoming the norm.

I’ve gotten several clients from Twitter and I actually recently hired someone through Twitter to be on my team and I’ve only been using it for a few months!

The point is: everything has changed. Had I not paid attention to where my target market was hanging out, I never would have had those wins.

Look at how specialized TV has become. Look at the blogging world. No matter how obscure, people can find information on what they want - in the format they want to consume it.

Are they finding yours?

Now, I doubt you create your information in blocks of 140 characters, or in YouTube videos, podcasts or submission- ready articles and if you do, I doubt you’re taking advantage of repurposing them into different formats than the one they are created in.
