What the hell are we doing all this work for anyway?

With all of the hustle of the day-to-day operations of business and the stress in the air about the economic crisis, it’s nice to be able to duck out occasionally to hang out with family.

I got the opportunity to do this last week. I surprised my Grandpa by coming down to Arizona to visit him with my dad. There are some things more valuable than money and family is one of them. One of the things I value about working at home in an internet-based business (and most importantly - with a team who takes care of the bulk of the client fulfillment operations) is being able to do things like this without having to ask anyone for permission.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably in business for yourself. If this is true - take a moment to ask yourself  this question at least once a month:

“Who am I doing this for?”

If you take less time off and spend less time with family since you quit your day job, take a few minutes to reflect one who’s choice this is.

I tend to overwork myself from time-to-time, but I pay close attention to the fact that even though my income pales in comparison to some of my most successful clients and associates, I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy many times the amount of down-time and vacations as most of them. Last year I took off at least 8 weeks including a month in Europe and two weeks in the Sierra Nevada’s with no electricity (yes, no phone, no internet.)

Now, I have no idea what your vision for success is, but I know it’s helpful for me to continually remind myself that although money is important (I have no delusion about that), without spending time doing the things I love, spending time with those I love and having a bit of time to do… well, nothing, the money really doesn’t cut it on its own.

Have you taken a vacation recently, took time off work to spend time with your family or did something fun, creative, interesting that wasn’t the “rational” thing to do from a business perspective?

If you said yes - good for you! Share your stories in a comment below.

Best wishes,

~Caleb

    Caleb,
Thanks for this. While I have always been very committed to not overdoing it (never work over 25 hrs a week) due to my big WHY (my family), I still run the ’story’ from time to time that I have to settle financially as a result. Truth is, it’s not settling AND I can make great money while living great life. Thanks for reminding us of the BIG Why.
